In 1941, 15,420 Latvian residents were deported to Siberia, including 4,000 children. More than 400 of them survived and currently live in Latvia. Five of them—Ilmārs Knaģis, Biruta Kazaka, Ivars Ross, Gaida Šmite, and Juris Vidiņš—talk about how their experiences have affected their lives.

Why did we travel to Siberia for 20 years? Why did we make this film? How did we see Siberia? People who were deported as children in 1949 and 1941 searched for the places where their loved ones were buried. After 2014, we were watched more closely, we were not allowed into museums, we were followed, and the people we had met were interrogated. When we found graves, we were not allowed to take out our cameras and film. And yet... we would never have believed that Russia would attack Ukraine, threaten the Baltic states and the Western world.

Aspiring screenwriter Annie confronts her fears, doubts, and creative blocks, which stand in the way of her goal. It’s a compelling story for anyone who has faced anxiety and struggles with themselves, especially those in creative professions who balance inspiration and burnout on a daily basis.

Katya (20) travels from a small town in Russia to Riga to attend a concert by a famous dancer she has dreamt of seeing since she was a child, as she is passionate about dancing herself. When she arrives in the Latvian capital, she is thrown into a whirlwind of troubles and problems: controllers and fines for travelling on an international train without a ticket in the companion's room; language and nationality problems; ending up in an apartment where Katya is harassed by strange men; fortunately, after a failed attempt at rape, the girl manages to escape from the apartment, but Katya's belongings and documents are left behind. Katya is left alone in a strange city with no papers, no money, no friends and no knowledge of the language. In this desperate situation, she is helped by an unusual Latvian young man, Ivars, and a penchant for dancing, which makes this reality less bleak in Katja's eyes and helps her to immerse herself in an idealised fantasy world.

At the end of the Second World War, when the German army retreated from Latvia, it also took along 700 boxes of materials from Latvian museums. If not for a young woman named Mērija Grīnberga, the exhibition halls of many museums in Latvia would be empty today. Grīnberga was the only volunteer who in 1944 went along with the train carrying the treasures of Latvian art in order to return with them back to Riga. The German occupying forces tried to take them away; the Soviet occupation forces brought them back; Mērija completed her duty. As gratitude for her journey, Mērija was sacked from her job at the museum and incessantly viewed with suspicion.

A documentary historical account of the fate of four thousand children deported in 1941. Only one in ten survived and can bear witness. We have filmed 180 interviews, and the work continues.

The years 1941 and 1949 became a fateful turning point for thousands of Latvians who were taken away without warning to an unknown destination. In a foreign land and harsh conditions, they tried to preserve their humanity, create a new life, and raise their children. These children grew up far from their homeland, in a foreign environment where they felt like outsiders. They learned a foreign language, lived among strangers, and asked questions that even adults were afraid to answer. One of these children is actor Mārtiņš Vilsons, who was born in exile in the Magadan region of Russia to the family of Zenta Vilsone and Rolands Čehovičs. In this documentary, director Dzintra Geka portrays his life story as a personal testimony to the fate of the exiled Latvians, their search for identity, and their return to a contradictory reality.
